Medly Spotlight: Alyson Coutts

For this week’s Medly Spotlight, we’re talking to Alyson Coutts, the Senior Design Manager of our Brand Design team. Read below to learn more about her career in healthcare, her role at Medly, and – last but not least – her love for pizza and live music.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I grew up in Connecticut but knew from a young age that I wanted to live in New York some day (this decision may or may not have been heavily influenced by the movie The Muppets Take Manhattan.) I’ve been a New Yorker since 2006 and still think it’s the greatest city in the world. I have over 15 years experience working in the design field—I’ve been lucky enough to work in both in-house and agency roles, for a wide variety of different clients. As my career has progressed, I’ve found that I really enjoy being a design leader and helping other designers grow their skills and watching them become even better at their craft.

Why did you decide to work in the healthcare industry?

My first ever job when I was 16 was at a big chain pharmacy in my hometown, mainly because I wanted the employee discount on makeup. A few years later, I worked at a healthcare consulting company in Washington, DC and while most of the content I was designing was WAY over my head, I could tell it was a very complicated (and confusing!) industry. Many years then went by, where I worked mostly in the tech space. But it was the pandemic that really opened my eyes to how crucial healthcare is to everyone and being able to help make things even slightly easier and more accessible for people was a no brainer to me.

What’s your role at Medly?

I am the Senior Design Manager of our Brand Design team. I manage a team of incredible designers who work on all sorts of projects across the entire Medly organization. From this very blog to all of our sales and marketing materials to the packaging our prescriptions come in and countless other projects, we are responsible for keeping the Medly brand consistent and evolving as we grow as a company. My specific responsibilities are basically part project manager, part creative director and part traffic cop. I make sure my team has all of the information they need so they can focus on creating incredible work while also making sure deadlines are being met and everything we create adheres to our brand guidelines.

Why did you choose Medly?

There were many things that originally drew me to Medly but the biggest was how invested they are in helping patients, in every way possible. I am a (relatively) young and healthy person so I wasn’t even truly aware of how difficult it can be dealing with insurance companies, getting prior authorizations, figuring out if there are ways to save on out of pocket expenses—the list goes on and on. The fact that Medly provides all of these things, at no extra cost to the patient, was so great to learn and made me really excited to join the team!

Another important element of what made joining Medly so exciting for me is what a big part design plays—it is a centerpiece in the entire organization. That is not always the case at other companies and as a design leader, it’s empowering to know our team is able to provide value and influence to all parts of the business.

What’s your favorite part of your job?

Definitely my team and all of the other colleagues we get to work with on a daily basis. While most of us haven’t even met in person yet, we’ve built such strong relationships virtually that I think really speaks to the high caliber of people that Medly attracts.

Now for some fun stuff. What is your favorite food, favorite movie and what do you like to do for fun?

Favorite food: Pizza Favorite movie: Alice in Wonderland I am a HUGE live music person and going to concerts is my absolute favorite thing in the world. Things are slowly starting back up in New York and it is wonderful to be able to get back to a tiny part of “normal” life again!
